Diabetes? Feeling hungry often? Eat this…

Type 2 diabetes or blood sugar is a very common disease which leads to the development of various other health complications.

In addition to medication, several dietary regulations are also followed in order to maintain the blood sugar level at normal range. It is also a well-known fact that people with type 2 diabetes feel hungry often due to increased glucose metabolism.

A ready reckoner to this problem is the banana. A commonly found fruit, available in various breeds, colours and sizes, the fruit originated in South East Asia. The name ‘banana’ was derived from Arab, meaning ‘finger’. The fruit is a storehouse of varied vitamins, minerals and fiber with an almost zero fat content.

A lesser known fact about the fruit is its hunger-satiating property, especially when not completely ripened. It holds a compound called ‘pectin’ which gives the coarse and sticky feel when eating it unripe or half ripe. ‘Pectin’ is a resistant fiber which escapes the digestive juices and hence keeps us full for long.

Since it takes longer to be broken down, it keeps the blood sugar level at bay and also helps those trying to lose weight by reducing consumption. The undigested banana when reaching the large intestine, feeds the beneficial bacteria that assist digestion, hence augmenting the digestive process and easing bowel movements.

Owing to the potassium content of the fruit, it helps preserve the heart and kidneys, also stabilizing the blood pressure level. Another advantage that the fruit provides is its role in fighting muscle cramps by managing the water and electrolyte levels in the body, not only providing enough energy for exercisers and athletes, but also fighting the resultant muscle strain.
